Little Tiny Pieces of Time

"Pain is temporary, film is forever," is how the saying goes, and when I was talking earlier to a sophomore here about Peter Bogdanovich's graduation speech she used the phrase to explain it.  She said that when he stated "You're giving people little tiny pieces of time that they'll never forget," he meant it specifically for the medium of film, because it lasts forever.  Obviously I disagree.  And not to turn the argument around, but live theatre could be said to endure even better than, dare I say it, stagnant, unchanging film.  What Bogdanovich was referencing in his closing words was not the physical medium of film, but rather the way it the art can interact with a person's mind.  The way art can affect people.  All through his speech I was trying to figure out what connected the anecdotes, besides the tongue in cheek message to lie to famous people about the quality of their work, and I believe I've discovered it: these were all pieces of time that have stayed in his mind, just like his speech (in the final anecdote) stayed in the minds of his viewers.  And just like every artist hopes their work will remain in the hearts of those that experience it.  I want audiences to walk away from my work not necessarily changed for life, or even aware of my role in the production, but I need a few of them to keep the moments I invented somewhere inside themselves, frozen in time, so that they can affect them.
